Ed.S./M.S. Admissions

Timeline | Prequisites | Procedures | Application Form

Timeline

Specialist and master's students typically are admitted for Fall semesters but, under special circumstances, applicants also will be considered for other semesters. All candidates are considered for admission as soon as their folders are complete and they are usually notified within two weeks following the Admissions Committee's decisions.

Prerequisites

  1. Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Home and Family Life, or related discipline from an accredited college or university. Students seeking only the specialist degree must have earned a master's degree in counseling to be eligible to apply for admission. Applicants for the school psychology specialization will be expected to have 15 credit hours in psychology, educational psychology, or human development, including one course in basic psychological or educational statistics and one course in psychological or educational testing or measurement. Applicants also will be required to have one three-credit course in sociological foundations of education. Admitted students who do not have these prerequisites will be expected to make up these deficiencies early in their programs.

  2. Satisfactory prior academic record, as reflected by official transcripts of all previous college work. Candidates will be considered if they meet the minimum requirements established by the Board of Regents for graduate admissions.

  3. Completion of the Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

  4. Although not required, applicants who have completed courses in general psychology and who have some full-time, part-time, or volunteer experience in counseling, education, or related social service, will be given preference in the application process.

Procedures

  1. Download an application form here. The General and Graduate University Bulletins may be secured by sending $4.00 to: The University Bookstore; The Florida State University; Tallahassee, FL 32306-4040 (850/644-2072). There is no charge if you can get the catalog from the bookstore. Applicants are responsible for reading carefully those sections covering all graduate programs and the special regulations for graduate majors in education. All students -- newly applying and those who have previously attended FSU as a graduate student -- should obtain applications for admission or readmission, from the Office of Graduate Admissions, Room 2249, The University Center, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-1009; telephone (850) 644-3420. Applications for readmission will be considered along with other applications.

  2. Completed application forms and other required materials should be filed with the Office of Graduate Admissions (address above). The following are required:

    • Undergraduate transcripts (two official copies). If you have a master's degree in another discipline, send two official copies of your graduate transcript.

    • Official E.T.S. score reports of the Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examination. Certification of foreign students whose native language is not English do not have to present GRE scores. Certification of their knowledge of spoken and written English is required by the Office of International Admissions as part of the admissions procedure.

  3. Each applicant must supply the Admissions Committee with:

    • Three letters of recommendation regarding academic and personal qualifications

    • An autobiographical statement including professional goals and objectives

    • A resume

  4. The College of Education's Office of Academic Services (108 Stone Building) notifies the University Office of Admissions concerning the acceptance or non-acceptance of an applicant. The Office of Admissions informs a candidate of the decision.

  5. No assistantships or fellowships are offered until the student has been officially admitted to a graduate program. Applications for financial aid may be addressed to the Office of Financial Aid, Room 2466, University Center, Tallahassee, FL 32306-1023; telephone (850) 644-0539.

  6. Students are admitted for the Fall semester (August). Under special circumstances, students may be accepted for other semesters as well. Applications should be completed as early as possible.
