PhD in Counseling Psychology and School Counseling
Internships
All students are required to complete a year long internship as part of their program of study. Students go on internship after being admitted to candidacy. Students concentrating in counseling psychology are strongly encouraged to seek internships at settings either approved by the APA or listed in the APPIC directory. Only in unusual circumstances would a non APA-accredited, or non-APPIC listed internship, be acceptable.
Students concentrating in school psychology can seek an internship within a school district which may not be approved by the APA or listed in the APPIC directory if it is deemed a high quality training site fully consistent with the training program goals. Students concentrating in school psychology often apply for internships listed in the Directory of Internships for Doctoral Students in School Psychology (prepared by the Joint Committee on Internships for the Council of Directors of School Psychology Programs, Division 16, APA; NASP; 2007).
Students in the program have been very successful at obtaining funded offers from among the most prestigious APA-accredited internship sites nationally. Most students are matched with one of their top choices through the APPIC internship match process. Internship sites range from university counseling centers, to hospitals and medical centers, to community mental health clinics and forensic centers, and in some instances, to school districts and campus-based child multidisciplinary centers for students concentrating in school psychology.
More detailed information on internships is available in the Student Handbook.
