PhD in Counseling Psychology and School Counseling
Certification and Licensure
Graduates of our doctoral program are eligible for licensure as a psychologist in the state of Florida. Florida has statutes which specify the specific requirements for licensure a psychologist and school psychologist (see Florida Statutes, Chapter 490). The program was designed with Florida regulations in mind. However, graduates of the program have no difficulty successfully applying for licensure and practicing as psychologists in other states. The program encourages applicants and students to check specific licensure requirements for any state that they might wish to practice as a psychologist in.
Graduates of our doctoral program with a concentration in school psychology are also eligible for Florida certification in school psychology. Florida certification in school psychology requires a specialist's or higher degree with a major in school psychology, including six semester hours of graduate credit in a year-long supervised school psychology internship in an elementary or secondary school. Applicants must also pass the Florida Teacher Certification Exam. For more information, please view the Specialization Requirements and the Florida Association of School Psychologists' Training and Credentialing information.
Graduates with a concentration in school psychology are also eligible for recognition as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Requirements include completion of a 60 graduate semester hours of study through an organized program of study that is officially titled "School Psychology," successful completion of a 1200 hour internship in school psychology, of which at least 600 hours must be in a school setting, and a passing score on the National School Psychology Examination administered by the Educational Testing Service.
