Mental Health Counseling Employment
The majority of our graduates seek positions as practicing mental health counselors; about 80% of them remain in the state of Florida. Most graduates find employment in the health care field soon after graduation. Graduates of the program practice in a variety of settings, including independent practice, community agencies, managed behavioral health care organizations, hospitals, the military, hospice care, employee assistance programs, student counseling centers, prisons, and substance abuse centers.
The outlook is very promising for mental health counselors nationwide. The U.S. is facing an increasing number of contemporary problems that will continue to require experts in the mental health field. According to the 2004-2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of mental health counselors will grow as the Nation becomes more comfortable seeking professional help and as society focuses on ways of developing mental well-being, such as controlling stress associated with job and family responsibilities. Employers also are increasingly offering employee assistance programs that provide mental health and alcohol and drug abuse services.
A number of graduates continue on for their doctorate in counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, or the APA-accredited Combined Professional Psychology program offered in the department.
