Jobs in Career Counseling

Most graduates seek positions in colleges and universities as career counselors, career placement professionals, coop/internship directors, academic advisors, and professional counselors (http://www.naceweb.org/committee/whitepapers/CS_Professionals.ppt). Others seek positions as school counselors, career information specialists in libraries and information centers, workforce development professionals in career one-stop centers, training and staff development professionals in human resource development offices, consultants and independent contractors with career information systems developers and publishers, and staff counselors in corrections, workfare, and rehabilitation settings.

The most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook provides descriptive information about the counseling field. It is important to note that the Career Counseling Specialization at FSU provides training beyond the minimum requirements for most counseling positions, which significantly increases the competitive employment advantage for FSU graduates. This means that in some instances, career counselors trained in this program will find themselves working with the mental health concerns of clients in addition to their career concerns.
