Statement of Purpose

Your statement of purpose should be no more than two pages in length. It should indicate, for your intended major, your academic and professional goals and aspirations, and other information which attests to your commitment and ability to complete your program successfully. References to previous work and educational experience related to your stated goals is useful.

Three Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation should be written by persons who are in a position to comment on the probability of your success in the Department. Letters have been found to be the most useful when they specifically state the basis of the writer's knowledge about you, the type and quality of activities you have been involved with in association with the writer, and the reason(s) for the writer's support of your proposed graduate studies. International students, may, if they wish, substitute Confidential Report forms for letters of recommendation. A total of three Confidential Report forms and/or letters of recommendation are required.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores

All applicants must submit official Graduate Record Examination scores to the University Admissions Office.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Scores

All applicants whose native language is not English must provide the University with a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score before being admitted to the Department.

Minimum Requirements to be Considered for Admission

 

GRE

A minimum of 500 on the verbal and 500 on the quantitative sections is required for admission.

TOEFL

For non-English speaking applicants, a 550 TOEFL score or a master's degree from an accredited institution is required.

GPA

Master's Program: Grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 based on a (4.0) for the last two undergraduate years

Doctoral Program: Grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 for the last two undergraduate years

Note: Successful completion of a master's degree from a recognized institution may be considered in lieu of the GPA.

Financial Aid

The form used by students to apply for admisson to the Department is also the form used to consider them for financial aid. Students need not make any other application for financial support. The Department has a limited number of assistantships and fellowships which will be awarded to qualified applicants after an approval of their record of the Department. There are also many research proejcts directed by faculty in the Department which involve research assistantships of varying types and time. The student who has been officially admitted to the Department should make contact with these faculty project directors upon arrival on campus to determine if there are openings and if they qualify. The names of project directors can be obtained from student's temporary advisor.

Graduate assistantships, research and project assistantships and College of Education fellowships are available to selected students. An application will be sent upon request.
